SERIAN: Serian Division has great potential to emerge as the main driver of Sarawak's agrofood sector, thus contributing to the food security agenda and Sarawak's aspiration to become a major food exporter by 2030.
Sarawak's Deputy Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Datuk Martin Ben said that the geographical advantages, logistics infrastructure and existing production performance put Serian, Tebedu and Siburan on the right track to develop as high-impact agricultural and livestock hubs.
The Kedup assemblyman (ADUN) explained that the rapid development of the agro-food sector in Serian and Tebedu is in line with the direction of the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, especially in increasing the people's income, strengthening food security and establishing Sarawak as a large-scale exporter.
"Serian is not only an agricultural hub because its land is fertile, but in terms of exports, the port is only an hour and a half from Tebedu. The airport is also within the same distance for the furthest areas," he said on Friday.
He said this when attending the Serian Division Administration Pre-Christmas Celebration Ceremony: Christmas At Border 2025 which was also attended by Tebedu assemblyman, Dr Simon Sinang Bada, Tebedu District Officer cum Chairman of the Council, Gerard George Entigar, Chairman of the Serian District Council, Dato Peter Minos, Serian District Officer, Inting Nyami, Siburan District Officer, Ranum Bari and GKCDA Deputy Special Administrative Officer, Ts. John Aten.
Meanwhile, Datuk Martin also informed that Serian Division is now recording proud achievements in the livestock industry when it successfully exported live pigs to Singapore and Selangor.
“Now our live pork exports have exceeded RM100 million. This is a result of the capabilities of our industry players. More new farms will produce products for the Peninsular market, Brunei and perhaps Kalimantan,” he explained.
