KUCHING, Oct 10: Sarawak has now achieved 100 percent self-sufficiency in egg production and almost 95 percent in chicken meat, thus proving the state's ability to ensure food security and sustainability of the agricultural sector.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the achievement was the result of the rapid development of the livestock industry as well as the state government's continuous investment in sustainable agricultural infrastructure and support systems.
"Every month, Sarawak produces around 1,300 metric tonnes of chicken meat and 55 million eggs, supported by 311 licensed poultry farms throughout the state. This shows real progress towards long-term food security," he said.
His speech was read out by the Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, at the 23rd World Livestock Veterinary Congress (WVPAC 2025) here, Thursday night.
Abang Johari said that the livestock sector is not only a major contributor to the people's protein source, but also generates the rural economy and strengthens the resilience of local farming and ranching communities.
This success, he said, shows that Sarawak is on the right track to achieving the goals under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy Plan (PCDS) 2030 which makes agriculture one of the main pillars of the state's economy.
