OPAR, December 5: Sarawak is taking a step forward in the agricultural sector with the launch of the Metropolitan Food Cluster project, MFC Opar, which combines the latest technology and quality food.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said this pilot project is a collaboration between the state government and the Netherlands, which is known as one of the largest food producers in Europe.
He explained that this project will be developed in the Opar area covering an area of 80 hectares, with a focus on the production of food products such as high-value vegetables, livestock, and other agricultural products using modern technology such as artificial intelligence (AI).
He told reporters after the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Development of MFC Opar in Stungkor Baru, Lundu today.
“It will involve a total investment of RM80 million, of which RM60 million is allocated by the state government for infrastructure development such as water and electricity supply, while another RM20 million is invested by the private sector for technology and materials,” he said.
The technology used enables a smart monitoring system for greenhouses directly via a mobile application and monitored through smart collaboration between both parties.
The first phase of the project involves the development of 10 hectares of greenhouses which is expected to be completed within 18 months.
“This step, he said, is expected to contribute to the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and modernize the agricultural sector and if successful, a similar project will be expanded to the Babuling, Spaoh area which has the potential to become a food marketing hub abroad,” he said.
The MFC Opar project is a significant step for Sarawak towards modern agriculture, leveraging technology to increase productivity and competitiveness in the global market.
