Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said this project in an area of 232.69 hectares will help Bumi Kenyalang achieve an additional income of RM1.5 billion by 2030.
SIBU, Nov 6: The construction of another modern pig farm in Sarawak has started with the groundbreaking ceremony of the facility which took place in Sungai Selabi, Selangau today.
Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development of Sarawak Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said this project worth RM300 million in an area of 232.69 hectares will help Bumi Kenyalang achieve an additional income of RM1.5 billion by 2030.
The Selangau Pig Farming Area (PFA), designed to accommodate 12,000 breeders, is expected to be completed within a year and will start producing 150,000 pigs per year in 2027.
"This facility uses the latest technology to ensure biosecurity to prevent African swine fever (ASF) which is about to destroy the pig farming industry in this state," he told reporters after the ceremony here.
PFA Pasir Puteh in Simunjan, which has exported more than 350,000 pigs worth RM312 million since 2017 and about 2,500 live pigs every week to Singapore, is expected to have a total number of pigs kept on a farm (SPP) of 250,000 while Modern Pig Farm (MPF) Ensengei in Serian, which is still under development, will have 50,000 SPPs by 2030.
Rundi said PFA Selangau was developed by Best Pork Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of a group of companies that has a strong reputation in broiler and egg farming in Sibu.
He urged the people of Selangau to get involved in the business by supplying leaves and cassava for livestock feed in the farm as well as taking the opportunity to learn pig farming.
Rundi also expressed the hope that the company could share its experience and expertise with young local entrepreneurs who want to learn about the company.
"We aim to commercialize the agricultural sector by 2030 and hope to increase the household income of the farming community from RM6,000 to RM15,000 to eradicate poverty," he said.
Best Pork Sdn Bhd Managing Director Richard Ngu said that equipped with advanced biosecurity and environmental management practices, the facility will set new standards in efficiency and sustainability to ensure Sarawak remains at the forefront of agricultural development in Malaysia.
