KUCHING: Sarawak is capable of producing up to 240 metric tons of shallots worth RM1.44 million annually after the shallot production project using advanced technology began operating in the third quarter of 2024.
Sarawak Minister of Food Industry, Commodities, and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr. Stephen Rundi Utom, said it was a collaboration between the Sarawak Farmers' Organization (PPNS) and a private company at the Sarawak Agrotechnology Park (SARTECH) in Tarat, Serian.
"In addition, another effort is being carried out at SARTECH Tarat, which is coral shrimp farming.
"The farm is developed on 2.1 hectares of land, generating a yield of RM1 million since its operation in 2022," he said.
He said this during his winding-up speech at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly here this afternoon.
In another development, Rundi added, the Sarawak Government has approved the development of the Samariang Batu Aquaculture Park with a total area of 123 hectares.
"The area in Batang Salak is suitable for shrimp and brackish water fish farming.
"This Aquaculture Park is also suitable for research and development (R&D) in inland fisheries, focusing on the production of fish and shrimp fry as well as commercial activities.
"To date, six out of 8.45 hectares have been upgraded for commercial tilapia and shrimp production by private investors, with the first supply expected to be sold in the third quarter of this year," he said.
