KUCHING: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Bintulu Campus is in the process of adding a veterinary medicine doctor study program.

The Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said that the effort is to produce more skilled workers in the field thus addressing the problem of shortage of veterinary doctors in the state.

According to him, his ministry will helped to establish the study program with UPM Bintulu Campus.

"Our ministry is ready to help and will even give full support to efforts to produce more veterinary doctors in Sarawak.

"What's more, this is a step forward for us towards fulfilling the aspirations of the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) by 2030," he said.

He said this while speaking at the Sarawak Veterinary Services Department (JPVS) 2023 Appreciation ceremony at a hotel here on Sunday night.

Meanwhile, Dr Rundi said rabies cases in Sarawak are still increasing and therefore, it needs serious attention from all parties.

He said, their involvement is important to prevent rabies cases from continuing to spread thus becoming difficult to control.

"We need the full cooperation of local authorities (PBT), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), dog owners to be with JPVS.

"This is not something we can take lightly and I hope all parties will help in the effort to eradicate the rabies epidemic in Sarawak," he said.

He meanwhile also reminded the public to immediately seek treatment at nearby clinics and hospitals if bitten by a dog to avoid the spread of rabies.

"As soon as you are bitten by a dog, you must seek medical treatment because rabies can be treated and prevented," he said.

At the ceremony, Dr Rundi also presented the 2022 Excellent Service Award certificate, the 2023 Retiree Appreciation certificate and the 2023 End of Contract Staff Appreciation certificate to the recipients.

Also present was Sarawak Veterinary Services Department Director Datu Dr Adrian Susin Ambud.
